Bed Bugs

Atypical feeding position. Bed bugs stayed on the cardboard and when moved away from skin, would not move forward onto skin but back up and retreat into corrugations. Front legs not used to assist in pushing stylet fascicle into skin, labium not bent, so feeding here must be shallow. See close-up insert. Red skin color is basically a birthmark, a nevus, but small red dots are from previous feeding by other bed bugs.
This feeding posture does not fit that described by Usinger (1966) Monograph of Cimicidae, Chapter 3-Bites, page 34 and figure 3-1 on page 35.

Not the typical position, bed bugs stretching and feeding and basically feeding while lying down on their backs. See close-up insert of whole bug, front legs not holding onto substrate. They haven’t used their front legs to hold onto the skin so stylet fascicle not deeply inserted into skin and labium is not bent. Red skin color is basically a birthmark, a nevus, but small red dots are from previous feedings by other bed bugs.
This feeding posture does not fit that described by Usinger (1966) Monograph of Cimicidae, Chapter 3-Bites, page 34 and figure 3-1 on page 35.

Preparing a talk for a bed bug lecture at an entomology meeting in 2010 and was able to take images with my android phone of a feeding sequence. Fed individual nymph and adult bed bugs to demonstrate bite reactions. The sequence took a little over one hour from feeding, reactions, to almost no visible reaction. I don’t experience itching. Red blotch is the nevus birthmark, not related to bed bug feeding.

Close up of the smeared bed bug on the glass jar. You can see the body in the smear and shed skin below it, plus feces, eggs, and young, engorged nymphs.

On left of female bed bug is very light colored first instar nymph that just hatched. Another nymph on her right is at least one hour old and is a darker, amber or tan color. Developed and possibly ready to hatch nymphs can be seen in the eggs on row at right. Taken on Dec. 30. 1/4 inch squares.

Flat rubber molding pulled back to reveal bed bugs hiding. Notice that bugs are at top of molding in corner where there is no adhesive.

Bed Bug, motel in Mississippi (USA)
Bed Bug Bites

Bed Bug, sometimes written Bedbug
Cimex lectularius
Found in a motel in Mississippi.
Photo taken at 7:50pm on 8 Sept 2011.

Bed bug is less than a quarter inch in length..

Bed bugs are making a comeback in the USA. They are hard to eliminate if they get into a dwelling.

This was the first night of a two-week driving trip. I found this bed bug when I lay down in the bed early in the evening (I hadn’t retired for the night — I was just going to lie there for 30 minutes). I caught it in a plastic drinking cup and photographed it. I showed it to a motel maintenance person. He informed the motel owner via his cell phone. And I was given a different room. The next day I drove to another city and spent the night at another motel. The following morning I woke with many bites on my legs and feet. I assume that the bites took 24 hours to develop.

I think I took all the correct precautions to avoid transporting bed bugs to my car and to other motels.

The bug did not climb out of the plastic cup that I put it in. But when I tried to pour it from one cup to another it was able to cling tightly to the plastic. It might have been able to climb the plastic cup if it was really determined.

In the photo, the bug is in the bottom of the plastic cup (I cut the upper 3/4 of the cup off). The cup is on a wooden table.

Bed bugs feed on blood, usually from humans. They have difficulty climbing smooth surfaces.
They die at 122 degrees F.

This is the only bed bug I have ever seen.

Photo was taken with a Pentax K100d digital SLR, with 100mm Takumar macro lens and No.2 close-up lens (that screws-in like a filter) and a Sunpak Auto 322 flash.

Ugh. Here is a header from Tripadvisor that Bedbugger brought to my attention:

bedbugger.com/2009/02/26/note-to-tripadvisorcom-bed-bugs-…

If these bugs are biting you, since they are PLANT FEEDERS, I’d say you have reason to complain all right. Sheesh. Not all “bugs” are the same.

Looks like Striped Stink Bug (Graphosoma lineatum). Anyone want to confirm?

Bed Bug Bites

About 10 minutes after having fed hundreds of bed bugs through the 1/3 mm mesh cover of colony container which is inverted on my arm during feeding. Since many crawl over one another during feeding frenzy, they produce the characteristic bed bug odor similar to a mixture of cilantro and citronella. L.Sorkin

Something crawled into bed with me last night and gave me a souvenir.
This is the first time I have ever gotten a blister from a bug bite. It doesn’t itch that much. I just hope it doesn’t get bigger or scar.
Freaking Korean bugs…

Don’t let the bed bugs bite
